The Problem: No convenient, accurate and inexpensive solution exists for assessing energy content of lead-acid battery cells. Battery state of charge (SOC) determination is critical in many emergency power, motive power, automotive and telecommunications applications. A battery “fuel gauge” is requisite to the functional assurance of battery systems. In addition, premature battery replacement is a significant and unnecessary expense. Existing solutions rely on time consuming measurements of cell specific gravity, or inaccurate voltage or charge bookkeeping methods.

The Solution: The patented solution is based on fiber optic sensing technology originally developed at one of the nation's national laboratories that effectively measures SOC and enables inexpensive, accurate and continuous monitoring of battery capacity. The sensor can be incorporated into battery manufacture or easily retrofitted to existing functional assurance and reduced maintenance costs to the user.

The Product :The SOC sensor offers additional benefits well beyond the state of charge measurement. Internal temperature sensing provides the ability for tailored charging programs enabling fast and efficient charging. In addition the SOC sensor provides electrolyte level sensing to insure accurate readings and to detect fault conditions well before they occur. Flexible sensor configurations provide the SOC measurement capability to sealed batteries at manufacture as well as retrofitting of existing wet batteries. Our software, interface control and GUI provides power, easy calibration and continuous monitoring of SOC, temperature and electrolyte levels for 1 to several thousand batteries for on-site as well as internet monitoring.
